In the municipality of Roerdalen which consists of the small villages of St. Odiliënberg, Melick, Herkenbosch, Posterholt, Vlodrop and Montfort you will find extensive forests, heather fields and shallow river valleys where countless animals feel at home. The council was named after the river Roer, the silver ribbon of water that flows through our beautiful landscape.

Culture and History
More interested in history? Visit the impressive ruins of Montfort Castle or revisit the old times at the water mill “De Gitstap” in Vlodrop, or the grain belt mill in St. Odilienberg. You can also visit the agricultural exhibition and the Carriage Museum La Diligence which you can find next to the Prince Bernhard Mill in Melick. A beautiful landmark of the 11th century is the Basilica in St.Odiliënberg. Next door is a Museum with a collection of archeological and local historical finds from the region. Castle Aerwinkel is located in Posterholt. It is a building from the early Gothic Revival, designed by the famous architect Cuypers. Posterholt is a so called street or ribbon village, beautifully situated in the valley of the Vlootbeek, a remnant of an old Roer branch.
