Weert

Gateway of Limburg

Weert, also called the "Gateway of Limburg, is a bustling city surrounded by nature, tranquility and space. A nice shopping center with indoor mall, special monuments, educational museums, fun events and beautiful nature offer the visitor plenty of opportunities. The city is a central municipality with a supply function for an area with 100,000 inhabitants and offers an excellent base for trips to beautiful areas in the immediate vicinity. Weert  adjoins Northern Brabant and Belgium and South Limburg is easily accessible as well.

Rich in culture

The culture lover will really enjoy Weert. In the streets, where once canals ran, the medieval street pattern is still visible. The centerpiece is the monumental St. Martinus Church in the heart of the city. This hall church is unique in its kind. About 10 times a year, the St. Martinus Tower, also known as the Long John, can be climbed. In the intimate center numerous activities and events take place that make the center so vibrant:street theater, the annual market and the horse market, the House of Nicolaas in the winter, Bospop in the summer and in September, the big city carnival,  which is one of the largest fairs in the Benelux.

From campsite to bungalow park

There’s plenty to choose for the tourist in Weert and surroundings: holiday parks, hotels, eco-farms, campsites and not to mention a marina for those who want to visit Weert by boat.

Rich in mills

Furthermore, in the outskirts of Weert other interesting cultural and historical objects are to be seen. This involves not only monumental farmhouses with their distinctive bakeries, but also field crosses and chapels that look like small churches. Furthermore,  in the "Weerterland" a unique number of windmills can be seen. No fewer than eight windmills and a watermill are still maintained and can be visited on special occassions like “open monumentendag”  (Monuments Day) and National Mills Day. The Church of “Swartbroek”, designed in 1924, by Achitect JHJ Kayser, shows an austere, expressionist style. Part of the cemetery of this church is used as a British war cemetery. South of the originally agricultural church village Tungelroy, runs the Tungelroy stream.

Active into Nature

The nature around Weert is part of an international parkland Kempen-Broek, an area in the Netherlands and Belgium. You can explore this area in many ways. There is a large number of marked trails for hikers, cyclists, horse riders, horse and wagon, and even for mountain bikers. Information panels provide the necessary explanations about this and also the tourist office can help you on your way. In addition, a recreation area including a nature and environmental center, nature trail, petting zoo, playground and indoor-(subtropical) and outdoor swimming pool, offer entertainment for the whole family. Because of the grazing by Highland cattle, the nature of the “Laurabossen” is becoming more varied for plants and animals. Northwest of the village Stramproy is also a large woodland and heathland, where you can find natural areas like “Tungelerwallen” and Stramproy Heath. Altweerterheide is surrounded by many natural areas, including the “Laurabossen”(Laura Woods), the “Ijzeren Man” the Iron Man and the “Tungeler Wallen”.
